Dennis Mangers

About
Dennis Mangers, former Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, whose career in public service has spanned five decades, the Dennis Mangers Fund for Young Performing Artists supports young performing artists from high-promise backgrounds in the Sacramento region, ensuring they enjoy increased access to performing arts education and training.

The cause is a personal one for Mangers. He recalled the barriers he encountered as a young man who loved the performing arts but whose family was unable to afford the costs of private art instruction. Even when his music teachers in school noted his talent — and passion — for singing, he was unable to pursue further training.

Dennis Mangers (mang-ers) graduated from Long Beach in 1962 with a bachelor of arts in elementary education and since then he has had an illustrious career in public and private service. Currently, he is the president of the California Cable and Telecommunication Association, the nation’s largest state cable association.

Named as its president in 2004, Dennis previously was the senior vice president and principal lobbyist for 24 years. Among his many honors is the Vanguard Award, the cable industry’s highest tribute, for state and regional leadership.

From 1976 to 1980, Dennis was a California assemblyman, representing the 73rd District in Orange County. A graduate of USC with a master’s degree, he became California’s youngest school principal, serving first in Earlimart and later in Fountain Valley. Also, he was an elementary school teacher in the Long Beach Unified School District and vice president of the American Learning Corporation.

The accomplished vocalist is a board member and current or past president of numerous arts, education, health and human relations organizations including the California Federation of the Arts and the Statewide Advisory Council to the Center for California Studies. While in the Legislature he supported higher education and recently has participated in the CSU Legislative Days in Sacramento.

Dennis has two children and two grandchildren and lives in the Sacramento area with his domestic partner of 15 years, Michael Sestak.
